Pasión Española

I only learned about this concert a few days ago. I did not even know that we have a wind orchestra (aka concert band) in Canarias. Wind orchestra is basically a symphony orchestra without the string section, save for double bass. GCWO were formed in 2014 and played their anaugural concert three years ago, also in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, in February 2015. Nor did I know any of the composers in the program apart from Isaac Albéniz. The new works of Valencian composer Luis Serrano Alarcón were performed for the first time in Canarias. So, a few discoveries in store for me.

Still, I was not completely determined to see this somewhat tackily-named show practically straight after my Sunday morning coffee. (Un)fortunately, our electric kettle died exactly the same morning, providing me with an extra motivation (CC Las Arenas is open on Sundays and is just opposite of the Auditorio). The tickets were refreshingly cheap (€10 stalls, €5 balcony), and the Auditorio was almost full. At Sunday noon! And for a good reason (even though I suspect some people just came to support their musician friends... well that isn’t a bad reason either). Forget the title: the musicians and the music are top class.

A mental note: the first row of the stalls in the Auditorio is not the best place to see a biggish orchestra like this one. I could see really well the conductor, the bassist and the nearest to me bassoon and tuba players (this latter, however, was hidden most of the time behind her instrument). Then again, I quite enjoyed looking at them, maybe next time I won’t be so lucky. Albéniz’s El Puerto was graced by the appearance of Ballet Español de Javier del Real, although I think there was not quite enough space for them on stage.
